Avian influenza H5N1 killed Cambodian girl


An 11-year old Cambodian girl living in Kbal au Village, Steung Trang district, Kampong Cham province has died of avian influenza H5N1on March 31, 2011, according to the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.

The girl dies as a result of respiratory complications after contracting human avian influenza virus H5N1. The statement read that this is the 14th person is infected with the H5N1 virus in Cambodia and the tenth to die from complication of the disease.

Initially, she was treated by local villagers after she got serious sick on March 22, 2011 and then sent to a local hospital on March 29 and later hospitalized in Siem Reap province.

Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health told local media that avian influenza is still a threat to the health of Cambodians. Early, identification of potential patients is the fastest way of ensuring they can have correct treatment.

The minister added that he also urges communities to be on the look-out for respiratory infection with history of contact with dead or sick poultry to promptly seek medical attention at the nearest health facilities.
